“TOKYO CRAFT ROOM” IS A MEDIA THAT CONVEYS THE NEW
VALUE OF craft THROUGH ACTIVITIES AND LOCATIONS.

(PROJECT)

Craft FOR THE FUTURE

Activities and media outreach linking contemporary crafts to the future.

“TOKYO CRAFT ROOM” is a media outlet that disseminates the new values of craft through activities and locations. Designers visit various manufacturing sites across Japan, researching the localities, histories, techniques, and materials. They collaborate with artisans, envisioning the future while creating items that align with modern lifestyles regardless of Eastern or Western influences. This unique project is a creation of items that are unveiled alongside the entire process, showcasing various activities related to crafts realized throughout Japan. TOKYO CRAFT ROOM serves as a platform that connects contemporary crafts to the future, fostering encounters between designers and artisans, and creating a space where new ideas and techniques intersect.

(CONCEPT ROOM)

“Where man hands and design converge” a concept room that evolves over time.

And embodying TOKYO CRAFT ROOM is the Concept Room located on the 2nd floor of HAMACHO HOTEL in Tokyo’s Nihonbashi Hamacho. The completed items are presented through this room, becoming a part of the guest space. Guests staying at ‘TOKYO CRAFT ROOM’ can actually use these items. A special room that gradually changes its ambiance each time a new item is added, the ‘TOKYO CRAFT ROOM’ transforms with every addition. The splendid craftsmanship, both in skill and spirit, undergoes new encounters and interpretations. From this room in Nihonbashi Hamacho and this city, the essence is shared with the world, projecting towards the future.

(MESSAGE)

The background of craftsmanship is rooted in the unique locality and close connections of the region. The history of molding clay and assembling wood is intertwined with the specific nature of the land, passed down through generations over the years. Simultaneously, it coexists with a history refined by traveling across cities worldwide, akin to the Silk Road. ‘TOKYO CRAFT ROOM’ serves as a space that, passing through the metropolis of Tokyo, curates the value of craftsmanship and is poised to become a new creative hub connecting crafts to the future.
